How autologous serum tears are made

Follow the process from blood collection through preparation and return of your prescribed serum tears.

5 min read · Updated 2026-10-12

This guide explains what happens between your blood collection and the return of your prescribed serum tears, including how to prepare and where to find your handling instructions.

What they are

Autologous serum tears are prescribed eye drops made using serum from your own blood. Your eye-care provider specifies the concentration and how you should use them. Each preparation is intended for you only.

The sequence, start to finish

  1. 1Blood collection. We collect the blood volume required for your prescribed preparation. The 40, 60 and 70 mL service options refer to blood collected, not the amount of finished eye drops.
  2. 2Serum preparation. The blood is allowed to clot, and the serum is separated for preparation at the prescribed concentration.
  3. 3Filling and labeling. Your prescribed serum tears are placed into containers labeled for you.
  4. 4Return delivery. Return delivery is included in your service price. We coordinate the delivery arrangements with you so you can store your drops promptly according to their instructions.

Planning your collection and delivery

Your service includes blood collection, preparation of your prescribed serum tears, and return delivery. Contact us before booking if you need delivery by a particular date or time. Be available at the agreed delivery time and have the required storage ready.

How to prepare for the collection

  • Follow your prescriber’s instructions about eating, drinking and medication. If you have a fluid restriction, follow it rather than increasing your intake.
  • Have your prescription and any required preparation instructions ready.
  • Upload your prescription during booking or have your provider fax it to (971) 200-8669. For email submission instructions, contact orders@stumptownlabservices.com.
  • Prepare the storage space required by your handling instructions and plan to receive the delivery at the agreed time.

Storage and handling once you have them

Follow the written storage, thawing, expiration and after-opening instructions supplied with your serum tears. Use them only as prescribed, and do not share them.

If the label or handling instructions are unclear, or you are unsure whether the drops have been stored correctly, contact us before using them. Questions about dosing, treatment duration or changes in your eye symptoms belong with your prescribing eye-care provider.

Our role

Stumptown provides blood collection, preparation and return delivery for your prescribed serum tears. Your eye-care provider determines whether this treatment is appropriate, prescribes the concentration and directs your treatment.
